Focus on Breede River area

2011-06-14

14 June 2011  by Breedekloof Wine and Tourism

The beautiful Breede River is the lifeblood that courses through our region and many visitors to the region will know this part of the Breedekloof well when they drive along the R43 on their way to view and play in the snow near Ceres.

The Olof Bergh Brandy Cellar dates back to 1900 and is well worth a visit. They don’t just make brandy, but also the likes of Old Brown Sherry

Botha Cellar is situated at the foothills of the beautiful Waaihoek Mountains. Although the cellar produces a large volume of wine, the emphasis is always on quality and it offers an excellent selection of well-crafted wines. The popular Dassie’s range consisting of Dassie’s Rood, assie’s Blanc and Dassie’s Rosè are produced for everyday enjoyment.

Waboomsrivier Wine Cellar is on the banks of the Breede River. Wine has been made here for 60 years and the philosophy is simple: fresh and fruity. Waboomsrivier gets its name from early settlers who used the wood of the Waboom, closely related to the world renowned Protea-family, to make wagon wheels.

Mountain Ridge is on the R43 nestled between the Mosterthoek Twins and Elandskloof Mountains which inspired its name. Winemaker Francois Agebag produces a selection of easy drinking white and red wines, as well as oak matured reds. One of the stand-outs is Dimension - a blend of Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot, which is aged in new oak barrels for 15 months.

Seven Oaks is best known for its flagship 6+1 red wine which made its debut at the 2010 Nederburg auction. Also popular is the colourfully-named Padre Rednose Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon.

Bergsig Estate is where the Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains meet, creating such scenic surroundings that the farm was named “mountain view”. The estate is a consistent gold medal winner at major wine shows, which is hardly surprising given that members of the Lategan family have been making wine here since the 1840s.

Port lovers this is definitely the place to visit as Bergsig produces several wines fermented in open cement tanks in the traditional Portuguese way

Rico Suter is set in breathtaking surroundings on a large wine and fruit farm at the base of the Waaihoek mountain range. This is very much a family run operation with Rico and his sons Carlo (oenologist) and Bruno (viticulturist), making wine from grapes grown on the farm.

Bruno’s wife, Erika, runs the upmarket Rico Suter Country House which is great for romantic getaways. But it is also a treat for children. The garden is fenced in, and boasts a large climbing frame, sandpit and swing as well as a ground level trampoline. Daypacks and utensils for picnicking are provided.

Lateganskop Winery, situated on the R43, was built in 1969 by Willem Lategan, affectionately remembered as Oupa Willie. Winemaker Vlam Fourie produces several wines including a Pinotage-Cinsaut blend matured in oak barrels and a golden Hanepoot.

River Edge Cottage consists of 3 stone-clad cottages on the banks of the Breede River, for those in search of an authentic country experience. House 1 and 3 each sleep 6, while house 2 sleeps 8. You can go hiking or mountain biking on the farm, fish for bass, kayak on the river and keep an eye out for Fish Eagles.

The Mill & Oaks Country Inn on the R43 is owned and managed by Chef Gerard and wife Tessa Creamer. The restaurant is open from Tuesday till Sunday lunch and offers a wide variety of menus. Accommodation in twodouble rooms, and two family rooms with a double bed and 2 single beds. All rooms are en-suite and air-conditioned.

River House Cottage and camp site offers fully equipped, self catering cottages situated on the banks of the Breede River. The cottages each sleep 6. There are campsites on the riverbank, each with their private ablution, powerpoint and outside light. Activities include bird watching, fishing and hiking.

Skilpadfontein campsite lies on the banks of the Breede River. There is a big braai-lapa were you can enjoy the company of friends in the heart of nature. Fishing, hiking and mountain biking are some of the activities. There are 6 sites, with toilets, hot showers and electricity.

Tygerboschkatz Ridge is situated on a 50ha private nature reserve close to Bains Kloof Pass. There are four fully-equipped self-catering cottages each with two bedrooms. Rates start from R600 per cottage.

Kingsbury Cottage set on the foothills of the Waaihoek Mountains, has an open plan living/dining area with exposed trusses. There is under floor heating throughout and a cosy fireplace. The cottage has two bedrooms, and two bathrooms.

Access to the UCT Mountain and Ski club runs through the farm, so if you are fit enough for the hike up the mountain, you can take your snowboard along - pre arranged permits from UCT are required.

You can also visit the nearby Olifantsberg winery.

hen you visit, remember to stop in at the Breedekloof Wine & Tourism information office in Rawsonville for brochures and maps – open 7 days a week and also offer a selection of our wineries’ wines for tasting and sales. For more information please visit www.breedekloof.com, contact us on info@breedekloof.com or phone (023) 349-1791.
