Caution "Cats Crossing"

They’ve named us “Heather” and “Fatcat” Preston some 7 years ago when the Preston family (then residing in Cape Town, South Africa) adopted us. 3 Years ago, in 1995, we were uprooted when we all moved to the picturesque village of Montagu in the western Cape. Whilst the town is lovely, peaceful and less hectic than city life, the house our family bought is situated in the main street of the town – on a stretch where we have to endure and dodge young lads on motorbikes, rumbling delivery trucks and the odd cowboy racing past in his flashy car. The indignity of this is that I, Fatcat, was indeed shortly after our arrival nearly flattened by oncoming traffic, I had some tyre tread marks over my shoulder, lost a fang and bled from my mouth. I was unable to tell my family exactly what and how it happened and could see they were very distressed. For 2 days it was touch and go but I pulled through with the help of our caring vet who visited often.

Heather and I have become familiar sights on the pavements around our home. Our family owns a Restaurant and Art Gallery adjacent to the property which enables us to meet and socialise with most of the townfolk. It has become our duty to also welcome hundreds of visiting tourists to town. Judging from all the people who know us by name and cuddle us when they walk past, we’ve become quite important and think ourselves reknowned ambassadors for our town. Proof of this fact is that our family and town authorities went to extraordinary lengths to erect special road sign (Danger: “Cats Crossing”) for us. We know it alerts motorists and could prevent them from causing accidents, but prefer to believe that they are there to protect US when we cross the road. We are, after all, no ordinary feline speciments.

We welcome anyone who has not been to our town to visit us. Photo sessions (with us posing with you under our sign) have become our – almost daily – duty and we oblige unprotestingly (most of the time). We will help to make your visit memorable and tell you more about our unique town and people when you visit us.
